D- Day , Normandy June 6th 1944, World WarII d_day.jpg
D-Day, the battle that took place of the coast of Normandy, France, and is considered the turning point in the war in favor of the alliance and eventually lead to the death of Hitler's dream of German world dominance.

On June 6th 1944 the operation called Overlord was launched by General Dwight D. Eisenhower and was the largest air, land, and sea operation of its time. the operation had a total of over 5,000 ships, 11,000, and over 150,000 soldiers.
As you can see in the picture the battle plan was basically to rush the german forces. Jump out of ship, swim to shore and run to the cliffs. Many people died before even getting to shore due to drowning and not being able to really evade enemy fire. They eventually overthrough the german forces for a victory but not without a harsh price. About 10,000 casualties for the Alliance resulted from this Operation.
